The Context

Why track FairPrice best sellers?

NTUC FairPrice is Singapore’s largest supermarket chain โ€” a cooperative with over 190 outlets and roughly 60% share of the organised grocery market. When FairPrice moves its prices, Singaporean household budgets feel it directly.

This dataset was built to answer a deceptively simple question: Which products do Singaporeans buy most, how have prices changed over the past year, and are shoppers happy with what they’re getting? Instead of relying on government CPI alone, tracking FairPrice’s actual shelf prices gives you a real-time, consumer-facing picture of food cost trends.

๐Ÿ’ก

Think of it this way: Singapore’s official CPI food component is published monthly with a 3-week lag. A FairPrice best-seller price tracker, updated weekly, can serve as a real-time proxy for everyday food inflation โ€” covering what people actually buy in the largest volume.

Methodology

How this dataset was built

Transparent data collection and consistent methodology are what separates a useful dataset from a noisy one. Here’s exactly how each data point was gathered.

01
Product Selection โ€” “Best Seller” Criteria

Products were shortlisted if they appeared in FairPrice’s “Best Sellers” shelf tag rotation for at least 4 consecutive months. FairPrice displays these tags in-store and on their app. Final 120 SKUs cover the top 15 per category, ensuring broad representation without cherry-picking.

02
Price Collection โ€” Monthly Cadence

Prices recorded on the 1st and 15th of each month from fairprice.com.sg, cross-checked against in-store shelf checks at 3 outlets (Jurong, Tampines, Bishan) to detect online vs offline discrepancies. Member pricing (LinkPoints) was excluded โ€” only standard rack price is recorded.

03
Review Aggregation โ€” Multi-Source

FairPrice Online product pages (verified purchasers only), Google Maps reviews mentioning specific product names, and tagged posts on r/singapore filtered by product keywords. Each review was tagged for sentiment (positive/neutral/negative) and up to 3 thematic tags (value, quality, availability, packaging, taste).

04
Trend Signal Classification

Each product is classified as “Rising” (>3% price increase over 12M), “Falling” (<โˆ’1% change), or "Stable" (within ยฑ3%). Month-over-month variance is also tracked โ€” a product with a 2% average increase but high monthly variance gets a different signal than one with a smooth, steady 2% drift.

Limitations to note: This dataset covers only FairPrice (NTUC) โ€” Sheng Siong, Cold Storage, and Giant may have different pricing dynamics. Private label / housebrand products are excluded (they behave differently from national brands). Promotional / club pack prices are not captured โ€” only standard individual unit pricing.
